26 Jul 2021 — EIT Food, a food innovation ecosystem supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), is launching a program in which ten “FutureFoodMakers” will call for a radical transformation in the food sector to promote healthy food access.

“The 10 young people leading this campaign will be FutureFoodMakers, which means they will have the opportunity to represent the voices of young people from across Europe. We are currently recruiting young people aged between 18-24 for this role,” Saskia Nuijten, director of communication and public engagement at EIT Food, tells NutritionInsight.

ALPENA — More people in Northeast Michigan have easy access to food than in prior years, but hundreds of households still struggle to reach a grocery store.

Compared to 2015, 56 fewer Northeast Michigan households in 2019 lived far from a supermarket and lacked access to a vehicle to get them there, according to the latest data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Access Research Atlas.

Local groups working to increase access to healthy foods

TOPEKA (KSNT) — Some local groups are working to increase access to healthy foods in Shawnee County and understand the problems causing food insecurities.

G’Tobia Washington is the Pathways Grant Coordinator for the United Way of Greater Topeka.

She is working to change low-access food zones through the use of a $500,000 Blue Cross Blue Shield Pathways to a Healthy Kansas grant that was awarded last July and extends over a four-year period.

“We really don’t have a lot of places where people can get fresh produce,” Washington said.

Ypsi-area programs tackle food insecurity by making healthy food easier to access

When Alex Ball was a teenager living with his family in downtown Romulus, the only grocery store in town closed down. 

“I’d never thought about food that much, but when the store closed down and our neighbors had no access to fresh food, I started wondering, ‘How can I fix this?'” Ball says. “So, at age 18, I started researching and reading and did some small-scale backyard farming.”

Baby and mother win right to access Healthy Start food scheme | Benefits

A one-year-old baby and her mother have won a high court challenge granting her the right to access a healthy food and vitamins scheme from which she was previously barred. Thousands of babies and toddlers similarly denied access to the scheme will now be able to benefit from it.

Healthy Start aims to reduce child poverty and health inequalities by providing free vitamins, dietary advice and weekly vouchers to buy nutritious food or infant formula to low-income families with pregnant women and children up to the age of four. Iowa Healthiest State Initiative increasing access to healthy food, visits Freight House farmer’s market

DAVENPORT, Iowa (KWQC) – The nonprofit, ‘Iowa Healthiest State Initiative’, recognized the Freight House Farmers’ Market as a participating location for a healthy food program at a press conference Saturday morning. The program, known as ‘Double Up Bucks,’ allows people using SNAP benefits to match purchases made with their EBT card on fresh produce. Amerigroup contributed one hundred thousand dollars to continue to expand access to food for low income Iowans.
